Small Town GF Guide: Steamboat Springs, CO

Steamboat Springs is one of our favorite mountain towns in Colorado. A quaint downtown. A laid back, relaxed atmosphere. Great skiing. Tons of outdoor recreation opportunities in the nearby national forest. And an impressive array of gluten-free eats for the community's relative small size. Here's the 411:

Supermarkets

Safeway (www.safeway.com) - has only a very limited selection of GF specialty foods

City Market (www.citymarket.com) - has a better selection

Bamboo Market (www.bamboomkt.com) - has the best selection of specialty GF foods in town

Healthy Solutions (www.healthysolutions.org) - also has a wide selection of GF specialty products

Restaurants
Restaurants within Steamboat or the immediate vicinity:

Mahogany Ridge Bar & Grill (exploresteamboat.com) - upscale pub food, known for its "dipping menu" (pair delicious entrees with a wide selection of signature sauces), great food in a great atmosphere, has dedicated GF menu (read our review here)

BeauJo's Pizza (www.beaujos.com/) - Colorado-style pizza, excellent GF menu (read our review here)

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant (www.riograndemexican.com) - can accomodate GF needs, talk with your server

Cafe Diva (www.cafediva.com) - on the mountain at the base of the resort, can accomodate special dietary needs

Big House Burgers Bottlecap Bar (www.bighouseburgers.com) - offers burgers on a GF bun

Rex's American Grill & Bar (www.rexsgrill.com) - offers GF pizza

Mazzola's Majestic Italian Diner (www.mazzolas.com) - offers GF pizza

* Big House, Rex's, and Mazzola's are all run by the local, family-owned Steamboat Restaurant Group, so there's good sharing of GF information (and food) across the three restaurants.

Thanks for this Pete-we were thinking of trying somewhere new in CO this winter-and I think this has sealed it for Steamboat!

Thanks for the tip, Old Town! I'll add Healthy Solutions to the list.

Enjoy Steamboat, Erin! It's a fabulous town. If you opt for elsewhere in CO and need restaurant recommendations, just let me know!

Cheers, Pete

Thanks! We just returned from Steamboat. Went to both Mahogany Ridge and Beau Jo's. Both were fantastic and as you described. Also, next to City Market is Central Park Liquor. They had
St. Peters
GF Beer - one of the best in my opinion!

Hi Rusty... So glad to hear you had a great trip to Steamboat! Thanks for the info about St. Peter's beer at Central Park Liquor. I hadn't realized anyone in Colorado was importing it!

Cheers, Pete

From A Local
My husband (who has Celiac) and I are locals of Steamboat and love your site! We are so glad you have discovered our GF options AND when you return we have another awesome place for you to eat and that's Ciao Gelato! They have a wonderful selection of homemade gelatos (all but one is naturally gluten free). Recently, I myself joined Ciao Gelato's staff as a chef introducing my own line of GF foods (inspired by my husband's love of foods he missed). So now local GF folks (and there are a lot) and GF visitors can enjoy yummy favorites like quiche, muffins and more! Next time you stop in tell them "Susanmarie sent ya!" Cheers, Susanmarie Oddo

Ciao Gelato! (700 Yampa Ave.) is located on the Yampa side - right across from Bear River Center. It's truly a local favorite. 970-870-7979

Sweetwater Grill on the Yampa River also offers a selection of GF items on their menu, including GF Beer. A really good place to eat.

How are the gluten-free food choices for lunch on the mountain? We're skiing for 2 weeks mid january.

Hi Anonymous... As of last winter, the mountain's on-mountain dining wasn't as up to speed with gluten-free as the rest of the town. But that was changing, and I was able to eat gluten-free on the mountain with careful selections. The Cabin restaurant in the Steamboat Grand at the base area is fairly up to speed with GF menu items. Have a great trip!

Steamboat's on mountain dining includes Gluten Free options labeled on the menu. You can also request Gluten Free buns and bread at on mountain resteraunts such as Gondola Joes (at the base), Thunderhead Cafe and at Rendezvous Saddle Grill. Try the Ahi Tuna or the grilled portabella on a GF bun! Yum!

Hi Anonymous... Thanks for that report! I have the full details from the head chef for on-mountain dining, forthcoming in a new blog post. Stay tuned!

Hi JB... Thanks for the recommendations!

Hi Woodknocker... As an upscale slopeside restaurant, chances are good Sevens will have GF options for your son. Even if not, options are available nearby. Have a great trip!
